3D Printing technology offers infinite possibilities for the jewelry industry and one main element to make this a reality is the coding and design process.

Every BOLTENSTERN piece of jewelry is designed and coded by our design team led by our founder, Marie Boltenstern, in a 3D interface. We use mathematical algorithms to create perfectly geometrical structures in a 3D interface on a computer. The intricacy of each piece lies in the coding of our in-house algorithms.

'Mastering the skill of coding algorithms allows me to fully exploit the advantages of 3D printing technology. It enables me to create pieces of complex intricacy that could not be produced by hand, or any other technique. I have been exploring to code geometries of movable structures for more than 10 years now and with every new idea, I am amazed what I am able to achieve through the combination of mathematical equations, geometrical exploration and 3D printing technology. My passion and aim is to create a completely unique experience for our customers through technology at all levels.‘                                   - Marie Boltenstern

Marie is an Architect by education and specialized in 3D technology in Architecture and Design more than 10 years ago. Marie holds a Masters Degree in Architecture from the Berlin University of Technology and a Masters Degree in Emergent Technologies from the Architectural Association in London. While studying, she became intrigued by the possibilities of representing geometric and natural structures in intricate fine jewelry designs.

'Each of our designs is inspired by a natural artifact and it‘s underlaying geometry. The shapes are described with coordinates and mathematical equations in a 3D coding interface before they are 3D printed. The beauty of geometry holds endless possibilities for unique shapes of our jewelry pieces. Mastering the skill of coding algorithms allows me to fully exploit the advantages of 3D printing technology. It enables me to create pieces of complex intricacy that could not be produced by hand, or any other technique. Marie codes geometrical equations to create perfectly mathematical structures in a 3D interface. The thinking process starts with the geometry. The architect is the craftsman of algorithms that generate original shapes and structures that cannot be made by any other technique. All our pieces are coded with 3D algorithms to derive a shape that can be directly 3D printed in 18 carat gold. The 3D printer is the architect’s ultimate tool, with which the coded design comes to life, layer by layer.  This coding process can take anywhere from a couple of months to several years.
